LSE annual ReLove fair 18 Oct 2011
29 and 30 September saw the annual ReLove fair return to the LSE sunshine, this time bigger than ever before. Stalls were held at Houghton Street and Bankside, to sell items donated by students leaving halls at the end of last year.
ReLove doesn’t just help out new students moving to London for the first time, by providing low-cost essentials, including kitchenware, clothes and stationery. It also saves huge volumes of unwanted items from going to waste during the great residences exodus, and reduces the amount of brand-new equipment being bought, lessening the consumption of natural resources.

This year, the ReLove fair prevented around 1½ tonnes of items from going to a landfill site, saving roughly 14 tonnes CO2e. It also raised £2,000, which will be put into the LSE Sustainable Projects Fund, and contribute to enhancing LSE’s sustainability. In past years, this fund has helped to establish a roof garden for staff and students to grow food, beehives and a green roof. All LSE staff and students can apply but collaborative projects are favoured, watch out for the application process launching in November. |
The ReLove stalls were run by a small army of student volunteers, who gave a total of 125 hours to make the event the success that it was. They also spoke to passing students about RETHINK, LSE’s new zero-waste communication campaign and the Communal Recycling Stations – the best recycling service
in London. (Pictured, right.)
ReLove couldn’t have happened without the input of the sustainability not-for-profit, CRISP, who have specialised in helping universities with halls re-use schemes since the idea was spearheaded by LSE back in 2005. |

University Halls of Residence Reuse Scheme 2011
Over the summer of 2011 the University Halls of Residence Reuse Scheme once again worked with the management, staff and students living in University Halls of Residence across London, helping ensure that unwanted goods and items left behind by vacating students could be donated for reuse and/or recycle, thereby preventing valuable resources being sent to landfill and ensuring the maximum social, environmental and economic benefit from reuse.
Over the months of June and July 2011 CRISP worked with over 70 University Halls of Residence, providing accommodation to 20,627 read more....
